Jack’s 5th Grade

Jack does just about everything full-throttle, so educating him is a bit of a wild ride. He’s either fiercely interested–discussing things at a wildly high level and wrangling ideas like untamed wildebeests–or he’s fiercely bored and dragging his feet and his pencil and having to learn the hard way to love what must be done.

Welcome to fifth grade at our house this fall.

IMG_6989Jack is doing a modified version of Ambleside Online Year 5. My modifications were adding several additional science books and biographies, and picking up the pace on a couple of other readings. I wanted to give him a little more challenge while also giving him space to get better at following through on assignments.

Like Hannah and Sarah, Jack has a weekly clipboard that lists his daily work, work done together with everyone else, and co-op classes (on the right) and the categories from which he chooses one assignment per day (on the left).

We have a daily hour or so in which we discuss his readings, written work, Latin assignment, and math. He narrates (tells back, in detail and sequence) every reading except for free reads, and he does one written narration per day. Each week he has to put on revised piece of writing into his history notebook and his literature notebook, and he writes all of his science experiments and observations in a separate science notebook.   • I’m still unsure where to place Jack this year, because he basically finished Saxon 7/6 and tested as ready forArt of Problem Solving Pre-Algebra, but he has a LOT of conceptual holes so I know AoPS would frustrate him. So, for now, we are focusing on Learn Math Fast through pre-algebra, in hopes that the conceptual review framework will help prepare him. And then maybe next semester–or even next year–we will dive in to AoPS.

And that’s fifth grade for Jack. Kind of intense some days, but often truly amazing. It’s the sort of person he is!

  1. Do you OWN a copy of the Book of Marvels? It looks fascinating, but I can’t bring myself to shell out Oh So Much Money for a set of books I can’t preview. Second, if you make it through Kipling’s Kim with Jack, I’d love to hear how it goes. I have a difficult time connecting with Kipling, especially as he gravitates more toward Indian culture. I read one chapter to my older kids and put it down, discouraged by their distraught grimaces of confusion. Maybe I’ll try again with Elias and John. Lastly, if you can get your hands on a copy of Myths of Greece and Rome by H.A. Guerber you should check it out. The narrative is more flowing than in Age of Fable and the literary excerpts are more well-integrated. We’re not all of the way through it yet, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be substituting it for Age of Fable in AO yr 5 from here on out. Happy reading!

    1. First of all, how did I not know that you do AO!? I thought y’all were Veritas Press people. We need to talk shop sometime!

      We don’t own Book of Marvels, but our library has one copy. We are evidently not the only family angling for it. So when we have it checked out, Jack reads it, and enjoys it. When we have to take it back and wait in line for it again, he reads from Van Loon’s geography, which is pretty good, and was cheap on Amazon.

      I haven’t pre-read Kim yet. So far the only books Jack really dislikes are Madam How, Lady Why and the Lilias Trotter biography. I don’t blame him on MHLW, because I really dislike it, too. I have him reading full chapters so that he at least gets the big picture of what is being discussed. I will probably sell it after he’s done and swap something else for the younger girls.

      We’ve done Guerber’s Story of the Greeks and Story of the Romans, but I don’t think we read the myths book. I’ll have to check that out. Jack read SO MANY myths books last year, so I feel like the Bullfinch is overkill, but he doesn’t mind.
