Say Goodbye to Survival Mode: 9 Simple Strategies to Stress Less, Sleep More, and Restore Your Passion for Life is a gentle, accessible, yet incredibly practical book about how to handle life no matter what your circumstances. This is not a book that will make you feel bad, intimidate you, or not speak to your stage of life. This is not a book about cutting coupons, skipping lattes, or fulfilling your potential as defined by other people. Rather, Crystal Paine, who blogs at MoneySavingMom.com, does a masterful job of writing about time management, goal setting, priorities, and living on purpose in an encouraging and motivating way.
I had a chance to read an earlier version of the book (it was one of the manuscripts I mentioned in my year round-up post) and although this was my second time through the material and I read a lot of time/life management books, I still filled Say Goodbye to Survival Mode
with tabs and took pages of notes. It’s that useful.
My favorite thing about the book is how honest Crystal is about her struggles to get out of Supermom mode while still living a full and goal-driven life. That really resonated with me, and I’m sure you can’t imagine why. By being honest, Crystal removes a lot of the guilt-trip baggage that often comes along with books about life management. She speaks to issues that people of all personality types and life situations have, and offers tools for discerning the goals, priorities, and strengths that work for you, rather than just laying down a program that works for her.
I also appreciated how Crystal balances vision and inspiration with practical help and encouragement to take small steps. So often books of this genre are either one or the other, and finding one that does a good job at both inspiring and equipping is rare. I took away great ideas that take a 20 year vision, and also easily implementable tips that take 15 minutes.
If you read Money Saving Mom you probably have an idea of what some of Crystal’s philosophy is, but Say Goodbye to Survival Mode doesn’t regurgitate blog posts at all. Rather, you’ll find that the book fleshes out some of the themes she blogs about, and gets at how to lay the foundation of a well-lived life–whether or not money saving or being a mom are things for you.
Say Goodbye to Survival Mode is a fabulous book, and I highly recommend it.
