The fiction book club I’m in is reading The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency and I quite enjoyed it.
The book is about a woman in Botswana who starts her own detective agency, and each chapter represents a case she solves, but really it’s a book about Botswana – the people, the terrain, and the way of life. I love reading fiction because it shows me more about a country and perspective than I could learn from a textbook.
If you’re that sort as well, you’d probably like and get a lot out of The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. I was particularly struck by the difference in perspective and ways of thinking between the characters and people here in America. The goals and definitions of success were entirely different. The author has apparently spent a great deal of his time in Botswana and you can tell he loves it.
If you live in central Indiana and would like to join our book club, we’d love to have you! We’re meeting to discuss The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency on Wednesday evening, August 3. Feel free to email me or leave a comment if you’d like specific directions.
