Are you in a book club? Would you like to be?
I’ve been in a few book clubs over the past few years and have enjoyed them. This year my church started a book club, where we read nonfiction and occasionally Christian fiction, and a friend of mine and I are starting a fiction book club this summer. If you live in central Indiana, we would love to have you in one or both of these groups!
Fiction Book Club
We will meet the first Wednesday of every month, beginning on June 1, from 7-9 pm. Our first book will be The Help, which was one of my top books for 2009. At the first meeting we’ll let you know what the other books will be for the first few months – we haven’t quite decided yet! But The Help is kind of long, so you might want to go ahead and get started on it if you’d like to attend.
Crossroads Book Club
So far this group has read From Clutter to Clarity and What Did You Expect. I’ve been really impressed with the depth of discussion in this group and I’ve learned a lot from reading these books with other women. Upcoming books include:
- Same Kind of Different As Me
(Wednesday June 29 – my review)
- A Praying Life (August – my review)
- Gospel-Powered Parenting
(October)
- Gilead
(December)
If you’re interested in either or both of these groups, please send me an email and let me know so I can send you specifics.
If you’re not in Indiana or are already in a book club, what are some of the best books your club has read? It seems like not all books are good for book clubs, so I’m interested to hear which ones turned into good discussion in your group.

Hi, I'm Catherine Gillespie and A Spirited Mind is where I post about reading, writing, and parenting and the lessons I'm learning as a result. Thanks for stopping by!

Wish I lived in central Indiana! Great book choices. I still have yet to read The Help….*sigh*
The Help is really good. Writing this post reminded me that I need to re-read it before the book club, oops!
I’m loving your blog, by the way. Great series this week!
Hey! I looked this up again to double-check the date of the book club. I noticed on the flyer that you sent me that June’s book was Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. Here, you list Same Kind of Different as Me. Was it switched? I need to get either one and start reading. It’s the 22nd of June, right?
I will contact you (hopefully later today) with dates that we can get together.
Thanks!
Just before this post went up the book and time were changed. So actually it’s Same Kind of Different as Me and the date is Wednesday June 29. Sorry about the confusion!
No problem. Thanks for the clarification!
Wait! Did you say Wednesday? Normally, aren’t they Mondays? Wednesdays just won’t work for me because of Ryan’s travel.
I’m sorry Dovey, it wasn’t my call. I got the notice about the book change and time change, but I’m not sure why on either point. Hopefully we’ll go back to Mondays soon. I’ll let you know either way.
Thanks again!
