Sleep is a tricky business

Sleep is a jade who scorns her suitors but woos her scorners. -C.S.Lewis

Have you ever noticed that when you most want to sleep, such as when you find yourself awake at 3 am, you can’t fall asleep, but when you most want to be awake, like during an important meeting or while driving, you can barely keep your eyes open?

Sunday morning on the way home from church, for example, I found myself driving with one eye open and one eye closed, thinking that perhaps the closed eye would feel more rested that way.

I think that’s what the professionals term “a hazard.”

Thankfully the children are all healthy at the moment and it’s been a few days since any of them woke up screaming in the middle of the night (“I just wanted a hug!”) but I tend to struggle with insomnia and even on the best nights I have a hard time getting a decent amount of sleep. This makes it difficult to get up early to exercise and do my quiet time, and also makes it harder to be a patient mom and motivated housekeeper.

So I’m wondering, do any of you have tips or tricks for falling and staying asleep? I’d love to know what’s worked for you!
