Sand, Lemons and Other Unconventional First Foods

Until our trip, Sarah hadn’t had any solid food. Then while we were at the beach she sampled vast quantities of sand. Who needs rice cereal anyway? One day at the beach house I left my empty water glass within her reach, and did not remember that it contained a lemon slice until I found Sarah noshing some citrus (see above photo). She loved it! I’ve never seen a baby tuck into a lemon with such reckless abandon.

Now that we’re home we’ve been giving Sarah some table foods because she likes to feel a part of the proceedings during meals. I’m not inclined to buy jarred baby food, nor do I really feel like pureeing food this time around, so I think we’ll just let her “practice on a string bean” every now and then for the time being.
