The Missing

It never ceases to amaze me how, in a smallish house with very little storage space, we manage to lose so very many things. We are currently missing the following items:

  • 4 assorted pacifiers (one of which may have been flushed down the toilet)
  • The “11” block from the Melissa & Doug Wooden Shape Sorting Clock
  • Harold and the Purple Crayon (one of Hannah’s favorite books, which she used to carry in her purse, and which has not been seen since we were in the waiting room during Jack’s surgery)
  • My seam ripper
  • The combination to the padlock I used on my High School locker
  • The padlock we used on the UHaul when we moved here from DC, for which I do have the combination
  • Countless socks of various sizes and colors
  • An Ann Taylor top that has been missing since we moved in nearly 5 years ago and which is probably hopelessly out of style by now but I still wish I could find it…

I am loathe to replace missing items because whenever I do, the item in question turns up the next day, as if it has sensed a rival on the premises. Perhaps I should manufacture decoys that will lure our missing belongings out of hiding. Then I can grab them and shout “AHA!”
