The Week in Books 2009, No. 15

First Art : Art Experiences for Toddlers and Twos is an excellent reference for parents who want to encourage their children to experiment with art. I have slowly come to realize that art projects with pre-determined outcomes are not my style when it comes to toddlers. I appreciate that some moms like to do that type of thing, but I find that those projects don’t hold a lot of interest for my kids, and I wind up doing most of it anyway. Instead, I’m learning to just provide a variety of tools and ideas and let the kids use their imaginations. First Art is very supportive of that approach, and gives lots of ideas and recipes for materials that can set the stage for some great learning and artistic development. I like that the book uses a lot of materials you probably already have on hand, and that it emphasizes the process more than the product. We’ve had fun with several of the ideas in this book this week, and I’d recommend it to parents of little ones!
