Seven Hundred

I realized late last week that I have written over 700 posts on this blog since I started it on November 3, 2005. I hope you don’t think I’m going to take this opportunity to share 700 things about myself or whatever in honor of the milestone. Na, I wouldn’t do that to y’all. Not that I couldn’t think of 700 things to tell you about myself, but at some point after the first 100 or so things, I fear the entertainment factor would diminish considerably.

I would, however, like to take a little time to reflect on why I blog. First and foremost I started the blog as a way to keep in touch with people. It’s a way to share my thoughts and what’s going on in my life without having to email or call everyone I know individually. I don’t think blogging is a substitute for in person relationships, but it can certainly help when you don’t live near family or some of your friends, and it can help build friendships when people read blogs and learn more about an acquaintance they know in real life. I’ve met several lovely people virtually through my blog, and some even in real life.

Secondly, the blog is a good way for me to process my thoughts and keep a record of things. I recently went back through all of my posts to add labels, and it was interesting to read things I wrote nearly three years ago to see how I’ve changed and grown through motherhood, challenging circumstances, and unexpected events.

Finally, blogging is something I really enjoy. I like to write, and I like knowing that this is my space. It’s neat that so many people read this blog, and it’s great that if something I say offends someone, they are free not to read too. I do wish offended people wouldn’t leave mean or offensive anonymous comments, but really, as Josh reminds me whenever that happens and I get upset, no one is forcing that person to read the blog, and no one is forcing me to leave their comment up (I do delete the ones that contain profanity, other than that I generally leave them).

If you haven’t been reading Catherine Wheels since the beginning, and if you’ve therefore wondered why my blog is named so oddly, feel free to read the first post I ever wrote, which can be found here, or in the sidebar at the right. Thanks for reading!
