A Puzzling Mystery

Our family recently inherited a lovely marble-topped chest that has a tall mirror attached by two pieces of wood along the back. In order to bring the chest to us, my mom took the mirror off.

Upon placing the furniture in our bedroom, we set the wood pieces holding the mirror to the base aside. When next we looked for them in order to set the mirror up, they were nowhere to be found.

Instead, we saw an innocent-looking two and a half year old, and her innocent-looking little brother.

“Kids,” we asked, “where did you put the wooden pieces?” The aforementioned children hunted through the toy baskets and brought us several toys made of wood, none of which were the wood pieces in question.

“This not what you’re looking for, Mama?” asked the innocent-looking two and a half year old.

“No darling,” I replied, “That is a wooden maraca.”

The house has subsequently been turned upside down, but the wooden pieces are still missing. It is indeed a puzzling mystery.
