Before bed we say Hannah’s prayers with her. Sometimes I’ll say, “Let’s say your prayers” and sometimes I’ll say “Let’s talk to Jesus” or something like that. Hannah clasps her little hands and Josh or I will pray with her. We don’t do the “now I lay me down to sleep” thing, we just do a short prayer about what’s going on in her life.
Tonight, after Hannah got her hands into praying mode and closed her eyes, I took a deep breath to start the prayer, and before I could say a word, Hannah piped up,
I went on with our prayer, but I was really struck by her little start. I think it’s important for our prayers to respect and glorify God, Who is awesome and holy, but maybe I get a little rote about the conventions of prayer, like always starting with “Dear God” so that I sometimes forget that prayer is a conversation too. Hannah’s assumption that talking to Jesus would naturally begin with “Hi!” just reminded me of that.
