I participate in Amazon’s affiliate program, and links you see in my posts to Amazon books and products are affiliate links. If you click over to Amazon through my links and make a purchase, I will receive a small commission, generally between 0 and 4% of the purchase price. There is no additional cost to you. I only use Amazon links when reviewing books or products I’ve actually read or used, and only when I’m already posting about that book or product.
I also recommend Swagbucks frequently and have a Swagbucks button in my sidebar. When you click on my Swagbucks link or button and sign up for the program, I earn a matching point for the first 1000 points you earn (100 points under the old system is now 1000 points under the new system). This does not cost you any additional points, and is an incentive for me to recommend the program, however I only recommend the program because it has worked so well for me.
I run small ads in my sidebar which are paid, bartered, or hosted via a giveaway at my discretion. Advertising rates are based on standard rates per CPM (thousand page views) and may change month to month depending on statistics. I only accept ads from family-friendly sites and from sites that I think my readers would enjoy or benefit from.
Occasionally I am sent a book or product to review for my blog as part of a PR campaign. I try only to accept books and products that I think will be helpful or useful for my family and my readers. When I have received a review copy or product I will always indicate that in the post, but I never accept offers of payment for positive reviews. Even if I were to accept a sponsored post, I would maintain my freedom to post my honest opinion in my review, even if it is not a positive review.
I sometimes work with PR for companies offering products to give away on my blog. I only accept giveaways that seem to fit with my blog’s purpose and readers.
I do not write A Spirited Mind to make money, I write it as an outlet for what I’m thinking about and to be helpful to others. I don’t disdain the money I make from the blog, because I put a lot of time and effort into the free content I offer every day, and I think my posts are worth the 2 cents an hour I make blogging. 🙂 That said, to date the money I’ve made through affiliate programs and advertising has primarily gone to offset the costs of domain name ownership, self-hosting my content on rented server space, and blog design. I understand that some people are offended by blogs that monetize in any way, but I hope that I provide enough value to you that you will overlook the offense if it bothers you! I will always endeavor to make monetizing unobtrusive and value-added for readers.
