Did you catch this article in the Washington Post about picky eaters? These people are NUTS. I read about the guy who only eats “raw carrots and celery, french fries, potato chips, pretzels, peanut butter crackers, cereal, beer and milk” with incredulity. This guy is going to die young for sure. What causes people to be so OCD about food? Didn’t their parents try to get them to eat regular food? Was it a case of too many chicken nugget and frozen french fry dinners growing up?
At my house, we always had to take a big bite of everything. We called it a “Greystone bite” named after the summer camp girls in my family attend. I’m not sure where that came from, since I never had to have a Greystone bite when I was actually AT Camp Greystone, but anyway. We were not allowed to say we hated something unless we tried it first, and we had to try it every time it was served in case we changed our minds along the way. By doing that, I actually came to like several foods I initially didn’t like (eggplant and spinach come to mind).
Then again, I’m not OCD. Maybe these folks really do have mental problems. What do you think? What did you grow up doing about food, or what are you doing with your kids to make sure they eat a variety of healthy things? Do you still have secret weird things you do with/about food? I’d be interested to hear your thoughts!
