Today I had this hymn in my head. We sang it at our wedding; it is one of my favorites. I didn’t have it in my head for any particular reason, but that was good because sometimes I need to be reminded to praise the Lord even when nothing particularly hunky-dory is going on in my life. As I was getting ready to post this, I realized that Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty is based on Psalm 103, which is also one of my favorite Psalms. So below the hymn text I also added Psalm 103A, so that can get stuck in your head too (in a good way).
O my soul, praise him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near,
Join me in glad adoration.
Praise ye the Lord, Who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth,
Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!
Hast thou not seen how thy desires e’er have been
Granted in what He ordaineth?
Praise ye the Lord, Who doth prosper thy work and defend thee!
Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee;
Ponder anew what the Almighty will do,
If with His love He befriend thee.
Praise ye the Lord, Who with marvelous wisdom hath made thee,
Decked thee with health, and with loving hand guided and stayed thee.
How oft in grief hath not He brought thee relief,
Spreading His wings to o’er shade thee!
Praise ye the Lord, O let all that is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him!
Let the amen sound from His people again;
Gladly for aye we adore Him.
Bless the Lord, my soul; my whole heart ever bless His holy name.
Bless the Lord, my soul; forget not all His mercies to proclaim.
Who forgives all thy transgressions, thy diseases all Who heals;
Who redeems thee from destruction, who with thee so kindly deals.
Who with love and mercy crowns thee; satisfies thy mouth with good,
So that even like the eagle thou art blessed with youth renewed.
In His righteousness Jehovah will deliver those distressed;
He will execute just judgment in the cause of all oppressed.
He made known His ways to Moses, and His acts to Israel’s race;
Tender, loving is Jehovah, slow to anger, rich in grace.
He will not forever chide us nor will keep His anger still,
Has not dealt as we offended nor requited us our ill.
For as high as is the heaven, far above the earth below,
Ever great to them that fear Him is the mercy He will show.
Far as east from west is distant He has put away our sin;
Like the pity of a father has Jehovah’s pity been.
